Ascension Rx is the premier option for receiving maintenance medications.

In alignment with our pledge to deliver exceptional benefits to SmartHealth members while optimizing cost efficiencies, Ascension Rx is pleased to provide direct  savings on maintenance medications. Maintenance medications are medications that are commonly taken to treat chronic medical conditions, most often requiring daily use. These include medications used to treat different chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and asthma.

 

Starting in August 2024, the first markets will be converted to a closed pharmacy network for maintenance medications. In order to ensure continued Smarthealth coverage of maintenance medications, patients will need to utilize an Ascension Rx Community Pharmacy or Ascension Rx Home Delivery for their maintenance medication needs. Additional markets will be added to the program monthly until all markets have been converted. You may still fill maintenance medications at a pharmacy of your choosing, but you will have to cover the full cost of maintenance medications if not filled at an Ascension Rx pharmacy.


Switching to Ascension Rx for your medication needs helps lower the total cost of treatment and keeps your healthcare costs as low as possible. It will ensure you continue to pay a low copay and enjoy all the benefits of Ascension Rx.

    Get your medications even easier by using Ascension Rx:

    • Maintenance medications can be filled at your local Ascension Rx Community Pharmacy or can be delivered directly to your home by utilizing Ascension Rx Home Delivery.
    • Patients will be granted three grace fills at a non-Ascension Rx Pharmacy for added convenience while patients transition to using Ascension Rx Pharmacies.
    • Ascension Rx Home Delivery delivers your 90-day prescription medications directly to your home.
      • 90-day supplies of medication filled by Home Delivery are eligible for enhanced co-pay savings. Exclusions apply. Not all medications are eligible to be filled for 90-day supplies with Ascension Home Delivery.

     Frequently asked questions

    • Can Ascension Rx Home Delivery fill my prescriptions for 30-day supplies?
      Ascension Rx Home Delivery can meet the needs of your maintenance medication prescription fills. The most cost effective option is to fill your maintenance prescriptions in 90-day supplies to reduce the number of packages mailed and pay the lowest out of pocket copay. The Home Delivery Pharmacy prioritizes getting you your medications as soon as possible on their first fill, but refills will be converted to 90 day supplies, as able.
    • Can I get all of my prescriptions at Ascension Community Pharmacies or Home Delivery?
      Yes, with some exceptions. Some medications, such as those which are required to treat urgent conditions, liquid preparations, and medications classified as Schedule II Controlled substances, cannot be mailed. In those situations, Ascension Community Pharmacies are available to meet your medication needs.
    • Do I have to transfer all of my prescriptions?
      No, only medications on the maintenance list are required to be filled at an Ascension Rx pharmacy at this time. To ensure a smooth roll out, you are eligible for 3 grace fills per medication to still be filled at a non-Ascension Rx pharmacy.
    • Can I opt out of using Ascension Rx for my maintenance medications?
      Patients are always able to use the pharmacy of their choice. If you choose to use a pharmacy other than Ascension Rx for your maintenance medications, you will be responsible for covering the full out of pocket costs of the medication. SmartHealth will only cover the costs of maintenance medications when filled at an Ascension Rx pharmacy.
    • Do I need a new prescription sent from my doctor?
      The quickest way to receive your medications is for your prescriber to send a 90-day prescription to the Ascension Rx pharmacy of your choice.
    • If I start on a new maintenance medication can I fill it locally the first time?
      You are eligible for 3 grace fills per medication to still be filled at a non-Ascension Rx pharmacy.
