SmartHealth Pharmacy Benefit

Ascension’s prescription drug plan is automatically included with your SmartHealth medical coverage. In 2021, Cigna will continue to be your pharmacy provider.

Important pharmacy benefit and ID card information

A new ID card will be sent to you for Cigna's drug plan in 2021. Your new pharmacy ID card will arrive after the New Year.

If you need prescriptions filled after Dec. 31, 2020 and you have not received a new pharmacy ID card, register with and use the ABS member portal. You can use the member app as well.

An electronic copy of the new pharmacy ID card will be in the member portal and app for you to use.

Your new drug plan ID card is different from your medical card and your pharmacy ID card must be used when filling prescriptions. You cannot use your medical ID card to fill a prescription.

You can only access and download the app on a mobile device, not a desktop computer.


If you are already registered on the ABS online portal, you’re ready to use the app. You do not need to reregister. Simply log in to the app with your current member portal username and password.

If you aren’t registered on the ABS online portal, you must register to access both the app and the online portal. 

To register on the app:

  • Tap Create account on the login page
  • Check the Accept box and tap Next
  • Fill in all fields on the registration page, and tap Next
  • You are now ready to use both the online portal and the mobile app.

Mail order

Mail order is a great way for you to save time and money on your prescriptions. Members are highly encouraged to consider 90-day refills for maintenance medications through Ascension Rx. If you do not have access to an Ascension Rx pharmacy, you may use Cigna for mail order. Getting 90-day refills is a great way to help you save money on your out-of-pocket prescription costs.

Rx Costs with the HDHP 3000/0

If you choose the high deductible health plan—the HDHP 3000/0—you pay the full cost of prescriptions until you meet your deductible ($3,000 individual/$6,000 family). Once you reach your deductible, your prescriptions are covered 100% for the remainder of the year.

Precertification and step therapy

Specialty pharmacy
Specialty medications typically are high cost and used to treat chronic complex medical conditions. They also may be drugs that are difficult to administer or have special handling, shipping and storage requirements. They are often self-injected to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, cystic fibrosis, cancer, or hemophilia. 

For specialty pharmacy, please have your doctor or provider fill your prescription through Ascension Rx, if available in your state. Currently, Ascension Rx specialty pharmacy is available in the following states:

Infusion therapies and specialty medications
Effective Jan. 1, 2021, submit your medical specialty claims to ABS

All benefit and eligibility verification and claim payments for infusion therapies and physician administered specialty medications will now be performed by Automated Benefit Services (ABS). Medical specialty drugs should no longer be billed to Cigna. These medical specialty services are subject to the SmartHealth deductible, co-insurance, and out-of-pocket maximums of the plan.

If you have a patient covered by SmartHealth who needs physician administered specialty medications or infusion therapy:

  • Providers may continue to buy and bill.
  • Contact your local Ascension Rx pharmacy to notify them of your patient’s diagnosis and the medication required. A list of Ascension Rx pharmacies and contact information can be found here.
    • The pharmacy will prepare the specific dosage and deliver it to your office to be administered.
  • Precertification Notification: For medical specialty drugs, SmartHealth/Ascension Rx, will be managing precertification notifications. Providers are requested to complete the Precertification Form and fax it back to 833-594-1875 OR call 1-833-594-1845 to submit a precertification. For oncology or complex regimen precertification, please use the Medical Specialty Precertification Oncology or Complex Regimen Form.
  • If the health ministry does not have a pharmacy, contact Ascension Rx specialty pharmacy at 1-855-292-1427.
