Top 5 Helpful Tips on How to Motivate Your Family to Be Healthier Together
October 28, 2020
Sometimes all it takes to be healthier is to have a great support system to lean on. Family members can work together to hold each other accountable for their unhealthy living habits. These habits can include unhealthy eating, lack of exercise, etc. According to an article on “Promoting Family Fitness” by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Health professionals and educators encourage families to be more physically active by emphasizing a variety of activities and ways to stay motivated, and by identifying opportunities for families to be active together. Staying active together is just one of the ways you can motivate your family to be healthier.
1. Give words of encouragement
Changing your lifestyle habits can be hard. That’s why it’s always important to give your loved ones words of encouragement. Staying positive is crucial in trying to promote healthy change in your life. If you see your family member struggling, then you should give them words of encouragement to try and help. Something as simple as, “You’re doing a great job,” can make all the difference.
2. Organize group exercise
Learning to be physically active together is a great foundation to have for your family. Kids learn from their parents, so you should lead the way in living a healthy lifestyle. One of the best ways to do this is by organizing group exercise. Pick 2-3 days out of the week where the whole family can do an activity together. Examples include a family bike ride, walks around the neighborhood, or a trip to the park for a game of kickball.
3. Cook healthy recipes together
When it comes to cooking meals together, you should choose healthy recipes that the whole family will love. Cut out all the processed foods and start choosing options that are fresh and full of vitamins. Sit down with the family and plan out what your meals are going to look like for the week. Help them choose healthy recipes and give each member of the family a task to do. This will create a sense of community and purpose. Remember that healthy food can also be very tasty!
4. Get flu shots and vaccines together
When it’s time to get your flu shot and other vaccines, then you can all go as a family, as long as your provider is allowing multiple family members per visit. This is important, especially for young children. It’s reassuring for them to know that they aren’t in it alone. After you get your flu shots, then you can plan a fun day out. Go see a movie, take a walk in the park, etc. This will help encourage your family members to get their vaccines each year knowing that there doesn’t have to be fear surrounding the activity.
5. Lean on each other for support
Having your family member to lean on for support is an amazing thing to have. It’s hard to make healthy life changes, but it does make a difference knowing someone is right there with you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your family and lean on them for support. Working together is the best way to motivate each other to be healthier!
