Brain Food: These Healthy Nutrition Habits Can Improve Your Mental Health

Your brain is one of the most important organs in your body! The human brain is working hard all the time, even when you’re asleep. That’s why it’s vital to provide your brain with all the nutrients it needs to be healthy. This can improve both how your brain is functioning and also your mental health.
According to the Mental Health Foundation, eating well may be associated with feelings of well-being. A recent study found that a Mediterranean-style diet – high in vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, etc. – supplemented with fish oil led to a reduction in depression among participants, and was sustained six months after the intervention. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to give you some nutrition tips to help improve your mental health:
How good quality nutrition can help
Eating healthy foods can give your brain the boost it needs. Foods that contain plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can nourish the brain and protect it from oxidative stress, which is produced when the body uses oxygen. Sometimes the oxidative stress can damage cells if your brain doesn’t have enough nourishment to fight it.
Be sure to avoid refined sugars. Multiple studies have linked a diet high in refined sugars with impaired brain function. This can worsen symptoms of mood disorders, like depression.
In order to supply your brain with the nutrients it needs, you should follow these diet suggestions:
- Cut out processed foods and foods that are high in refined sugar
- Eat more fruits and vegetables each day
- Try to eat leaner meats like chicken, turkey, and fish
- Some people feel better when they are on a dairy-free diet. You can try it out and see if that is something that works better for your body.
Additional mental health tips
In addition to adjusting your diet, you can also try these quick and easy mental health tips:
- Take time to focus on your breathing. Meditation is a good way to release stress. This can be effective for you even if you only take 15 minutes out of your day to meditate.
- Find a physical activity that you love doing. Exercise is a great way to ease tension in the body. It can help improve both mental and physical health.
- Talk to a friend or family member. If you are feeling stressed, find someone to talk to.
