7 Ways to Stay Hydrated & Beat the Heat This Summer

Sometimes it can be hard to stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. Our bodies are constantly sweating in the summer which increases our need for hydration. According to the American Heart Association, keeping the body hydrated is critical for heart health. It helps the heart more easily pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles. And, it helps the muscles work efficiently. Dehydration is a serious condition that can lead to problems from swollen feet or a headache to life-threatening illnesses such as heat stroke. Don’t let your body reach the point of dehydration. Here are 7 ways you can beat the heat:
1. Carry a refillable water bottle
One of the best things you can carry with you during the summer is a refillable water bottle. This is great for the environment and it ensures you always have water with you on-the-go. Water bottles are lightweight and easy to carry. You can use it throughout the day and just refill it when you need to.
2. Drink lots of water throughout the day
Take water breaks often during the day. If you are taking a walk outside on your break from work, then make sure you are bringing water to drink. It’s important to continue to hydrate as the day moves forward.
3. Eat food that contains water
You don’t have to necessarily only drink water! There are lots of foods that contain water to help hydrate your body. These are great if you’re looking to add an extra hydration boost to your day, but remember that drinking water is still the best way to get hydrated. Foods with high water content are strawberries, watermelon, celery, tomatoes, peaches, and cantaloupe. A lot of fruits and veggies are high in water content, but these are the ones with the highest percentage.
4. Track your water intake with an app
You can utilize technology to help you keep track of how much water you’re drinking each day. There are quite a few apps out there to help with this. Be sure to browse and find the one that you like the best. Remember that the more physical activity you are doing, the more water you will need to drink.
5. Drink a glass of water in the morning
When you wake up, one of the best things to do is drink a full glass of water. It is something easy that you can add to your routine. It will help increase your water intake for the day and get you off to a good start first thing in the morning!
6. Prevent falls
Dehydration can sneak up on you! That’s why it’s important to know the signs of dehydration so you don’t have serious health problems. Signs of dehydration include:
- Dark or decreased amount of urine
- Dry mouth and swollen tongue
- Sugar cravings
- Heart palpitations
If you experience dizziness or heart palpitations, then you should seek medical help immediately.
7. Don't wait until you are thirsty
Thirst is not a good indicator of when you need to drink water. If you are thirsty, then there is a good chance your body is already dehydrated. Take water breaks and continue to replenish your body throughout the day. Relying on thirst is not healthy. Instead, keep track of your intake and make time to drink plenty of water each day.
